The Evolution of Project BeLeaf

Our biggest news for those who know our initial story is the evolution of Project BeLeaf to Coraluma. What started as a weekend hackathon has bloomed into a strong startup company. Coraluma, by the way, is a loose translation from Epseranto for heart light.

Thank you for being here. As readers of our first blog post, you’ve likely been with us since our earliest days. We are eternally grateful. Your support on our journey means everything to us. And what a journey!

We started off by co-winning the PHIX prize at the Hatching Health hackathon in 2017. We can’t thank the judges enough for selecting our Project BeLeaf pitch. Winning the People’s Choice award a few months later was just as thrilling.

UBC Accelerator Program Participants

Then we entered Entrepreneurship@UBC’s 6-week Lean Launchpad accelerator program. We refined our prototype idea using a lean canvas business plan. Each week, we pitched concepts to mentors and advisors, all the while receiving both praise and tough questions. Thank you to our mentors! And thank you to our fellow startup teams for their encouragement and questions. We wish them well with their companies.

From there, we went right into the UBC Venture Builder program for promising startups. Now that we had a better idea of the product we were developing, our entrepreneurship mentors grilled us on what it takes, not just to build a company, but a viable one.

Nothing without Customer Engagement

Most importantly, we thank the dozens of people we interviewed in our customer validation process. We know you have been waiting patiently for Coraluma to get into your hands. As evolutions go, from project concept to company it’s seemed pretty quick on our end. To the parents, partners, psychologists, nurses, patients, coaches, pastors, friends and family who gave us their time and insights – our thanks. Without you, none of this would be possible.
